2. wmSpeakerIllustration: Achievement
After more than a year as Barbara Bush's
press secretary, Anna Perez marveled at the wonders of
her position. Perez has good reasons: there was a time
when she dreamed not of having a White House
office, but simply of having a roof over her head. Perez
was in the fifth grade when she came home from school
and found her mother, two brothers and two sisters sitting
on the street. They had been evicted. "Mom had to split up
the family," Perez remembers. "I lived with my fifth-grade
teacher for a while. But not matter how bad things got, my
mother made it clear that we were not defined by our
financial situation. We were defined by our ability to overcome it."
Through Christ we are more than able!

4. wm Tip: NETWORKING
Networking is one of the most effective ways
to begin or build a women's enrichment ministry.
We must be willing to look beyond the borders of our
own knowledge and even our own church to see what
resources and information is available in other churches
and denominations.  Networking is sharing information,
ideas and resources.  A network is a group of people who
agree to help one another.  First check with the other
churches in your area, association,  or region to see if they
have a women's ministry.  Next check to see who the contact
for women's ministry is on the state level by calling your
state office.  Let these people know of your need for help and
your interest in training and information to assist you in your
church ministry.  Then check to see what other evangelical
denominations are doing.   Call, write, fax, e-mail and get
together with those in your network to both receive and give
help.  Others may need your ideas as much as you need
theirs.  Remember-what works in one church may not work in
yours. Some items you might want to discuss could include:
"How did you get involved in women's ministry?'',  "What is
your biggest challenge?'', "What meetings have been helpful
to your leadership and ministry development?''  and "What
reading has helped the most?''  We should  gather information
from many areas and then pray to see what God would have us
use in our own church.  Most of all networking helps you to
know you are not alone in ministry and that there is mutual
support as you look together with others for answers to
your ministry needs.

7. New Column: What Works
Below is an example of a new column we want you to
participate in. It doesn't take much. Just tell us what worked
at your recent women's event and/or leadership meeting.

This past weekend I had the privilege of leading worship
and speaking at the Tulsa Metro Baptist Association
Praiseworthy Woman Retreat. Here is what worked there.
At the close of the last session, ten 6-foot crosses made with
2x4s, were laid around the auditorium. In line with the theme
of the retreat, "Whatever is pure?", women were given a
note card to list their impurities. They were then were asked
to nail their impurities to the cross, symbolizing forgiveness
and the price that Christ paid for our sins. The ringing of
the hammers, while I played "Cast all your cares upon Him",
was a truly moving experience.
