1. FROM THE PUBLISHER
It's funny how often I have spiritual encounters while
in my kitchen. It's not that my kitchen is a sacred
place, it's the law of averages, I spend a lot of time
in my kitchen!

As I was making spaghetti sauce, I felt the nudge
of the Holy Spirit to make plenty, enough to take
to the neighbor with the new baby whom I had never
met. I reasoned why I should not, I rationalized
why I could not, then I decided to obey the
voice of the Lord.

I was so nervous! Over the years I have become
accustomed to public ministry - there is a certain
safety in it - but one on one with a stranger who
may not even want my spaghetti or my witness
was dangerous and frightening!

I tried to rehearse what I would say and I
knew God was leading me to tell her the truth -
"I am bringing you spaghetti because I am a
Christian, and God put it on my heart to reach
out and bring you dinner and let you know
He loves you."

Since delayed obedience is disobedience,
I marched boldly across the street, knocked
on the door, and with little eloquence I handed
her spaghetti and told her all God led me to say.

She was touched, amazed, and overwhelmed.
She told me with tears in her eyes what every
new mom tells. . . I am tired, I am lonely, I am
inadequate. . ." and she also told me . . .
"Thank you".

Obedience gives great reward. Trusting God
in an uncomfortable area renews our confidence
in His sovereignty. Stepping out on a new limb
makes us want, even more, to walk by faith.

Just because something is not easy or natural
for us does not mean it is outside of our calling.
That one woman is no less important than the
thousands I may speak to in public ministry.

Let us never get so comfortable in our ministry
zone that we miss the call of God. True public
ministry cannot occur if private ministry does not.
So ladies, stock up on the Ragu, you never know
when God will need it!

2. SPECIAL EVENTS: PROGRAMS OR PEOPLE?
Why did you have your last women's special event? Was it because you always had it? Was it because you heard that First Church had a similar event and it was successful there? Did you find a great logo and plan something to go with it?

Every special event should be planned to meet needs of women. Often, it is easier to copy an event we have heart about than it is to determine the needs of our women and program to meet those needs. Lots of programs and flashy brochures can be impressive, but are lives being changed?

A special event is different from an ongoing small group. A special event is a one-time event that focuses on a particular issue or theme. Usually we do extra things to make it special but the purpose of providing special events is still to reach women for Christ, mature women in the faith, involve women in service through spiritual gifts and talents, and support and undergird the church. Having a purpose gives direction and makes planning easier. In order to reach women, there must be something significant that they want to experience at the event. Then, not only to we reach them, but we disciple them so that they grow closer to Christ and His ways. As women come to Christ and grow in their relationships with Him, they will want to serve. Planning special events through women's enrichment ministry will help them learn to use their gifts and talents for the Lord. This supports the church as well as the women. After all, Christ
commands us to ":go and make disciples". God bless!

3. SPEAKER ILLUSTRATION: TOO INVOLVED?
A woman walking across a parking lot saw a driverless car slowly rolling toward her. With unusual agility, she sprinted to it, opened the door and pulled the emergency brake, bringing the car to a jarring halt. As she got out, a man in work-clothes was among the fast-gathering crowd that approached her. "Well, I stopped that car!" she announced with pride. "Yeah, I know," replied the man. "I was pushing it."

5. RECOMMENDED GIFT BOOK FOR MOTHER'S DAY
Last week I had lunch with noted author and speaker
Cheri Fuller (When Mother's Pray, and others). She was
sharing with me her recently released book Quiet Whispers
From God's Heart for Women. It's a beautifully illustrated gift
book, with true stories of occasions when women heard
God's quiet whispers through their children, friends, and other
situations. Among numerous contributors, you'll find a
story from me. Consider it for Mother's Day. I'm confident you'll
love it. In your local bookstores (Publisher, JCountryman), or buy it online like I did at http://www.womensministry.net/Bookstore/wmBookstore.htm . Jennifer.  Find Cheri at www.womensministry.net/cheri
