1. FROM THE PUBLISHER
It's been so great receiving emails from many of you
raving about our newest wmPeopleDirectory. For some
of you it's been an answer to pray as you can now
find a speaker for your next women's ministry event.
For those of you that have added your listing, you are
now getting exposure to thousands of women who
visit our site each month. Visit www.womensministry.net/directory

I recently led worship and spoke at a retreat with the theme
You GROW Girl. It capped off an entire year of
monthly events - each month having a separate theme
related to You GO Girl. The retreat was well planned by
TORCH Ministries.
with every element tied together with some aspect of
growing in your relationship with the Lord. The center
pieces were fruitopiaries signifying the fruit of the spirit.
There were fountain and nametags in the shape of
watering cans. However the topics for workshops
and seminars were not necessarily tied in with the
retreat theme. Point: Themes help to create a "climate" -
or an ambiance (as you'll read later) for your retreat.
But don't let your theme control you, or your program
committee. I've seen many "climates" turn cold because
because one or two women were so committed to THE
theme, that they forgot to treat others with kindness.

I'll look forward to seeing some of you at my concerts in
in the Melbourne area this Sunday (FBC, Eugallie, FL)
and in Tallahassee, FL on July 4th (Celebration Baptist
Church). Please say hello.

2. wmLeadership Tip: CLIMATE CONTROL
My good friend Bob Burroughs provides this leadership
tip that has applications for every woman that is a leader.

Ever notice that every home has its own unique fragrance
or climate--sometimes called ambiance. Perhaps you
can recall the particular aroma of the home in which you
grew up or the smell in the home of your grandparents.
Application of this analogy can also be made to the church (or
women's ministry) where your serve as a leader.
There is a climate...a fragrance...an ambiance that your team
members get when they are with you and under your leadership.
They not be able to verbalize it--but the fragrance is there and
they just know it.

That fragrance, climate, or ambiance may be described in different ways:
• cheerful...sad
• healthy...unhealthy
• encouraging...discouraging
• optimistic...pessimistic
• upbeat...downbeat
• go for it...hold back
• stretch and grow...don't rock the boat
• challenge the status quo...status quo is all right for now
• dream the dream...sleep on it another day

Whether you say it or not, the ambiance is there. In a healthy climate,
there will be positive, high energy-level performance. Relationships
will be authentic and vibrant. People will feel fulfilled in what they do.
They will enjoy being in the environment where you are as their leader.

Leaders: how would you diagnose the ambiance in your women's ministry
organization at this moment?

A leader's primary role is "climate control." The passive leader
who simply permits a whatever climate to develop will see
mediocrity and often a lack of purpose among his followship.
Climate control takes intentionality.

Leaders must be lifelong learners in staff/team leadership development.
The Bible, of course, is our primary source, but like Jesus, we can draw
from everyday life by:

• reading continually books on leadership...always be reading!
• attending training opportunities available to you
• network with other leaders via email, phone or personal conferences
• not staying in our own private fortress and watching the world pass by
while you think you are on the cutting edge of life--when in reality, your
cutting edge might be rather dull.
• staying fresh and up-to-date on articles related to your areas of
expertise, using such resources as WomensMinistry.Net

If you are a leader...make sure you are creating a good climate or ambiance
for those who follow you. It will pay great dividends in the future.

3. SPEAKER ILLUSTRATION: To Remember is to Understand
I got a fortune cookie that said, "To remember is to understand."
I have never forgotten it. A good judge remembers what it was
like to be a lawyer. A good editor remembers being a writer.
A good parent remembers what it was like to be a child.

5. PARENT TIP WITH CHERI FULLER
Happy Trails to You: Travelling with Kids
"Are we there yet?" is kids' inevitable question when
you're on the road during family vacation time.
To keep things positive, fun, and help your children learn
lots as you travel, try these suggestions:

1. By the Sea, By the Sea--When your family goes to the beach,
a seaside scavenger hunt is a great way to have a good
time and whet your kids' appetites for science and
oceanography. Pair older with younger members; wear tennis
or beach shoes and carry plastic pails; low tide is best
for finding sea creatures. Pass out a list and disperse
to find as many things as you can: hermit crabs,
attached barnacles, shells, sea grasses, fiddler
crabs, starfish, lobster parts, sand dollars, gull feathers,
driftwood, etc. Afterward, celebrate with cold drinks and
cookies and look at your "finds." (You can also have a
scavenger hunt at a state park; just change the list to
include things you'd find!)

2. Listen and learn--Check out from the library
wonderful children's books and stories on audiotape
like The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, James
and the Giant Peach or Beezus and Ramona. The
younger kids might even be relaxed enough to take
a nap while listening!

3. Make a Travel Box--In a plastic container or tote, put
pocket games like Yahtzee, Scabble or checkers, a
pack of cards for playing Gin Rummy, pencils and paper.
You could bring Game Boy and FeltKids Travel Playset for
preschoolers. Stick in a crossword puzzle or wordfind book
and a few new paperback books and boredom will be banished!

8. WHAT WORKS FOR US
On May 22, 1999 Wolf Creek Baptist had a
Mother/Daughter banquet. It was called A Day to
Remember - A celebration of our wedding days.
The church was decorated as if an actual wedding
was to take place. We had a fashion show of
all the bridal, brides maids and flower girl dresses
that women in our church had. We had 7th grade boys
from the youth group in tuxedos to usher everyone
to their seats and to light the candles. They then
ushered the person modeling a mother of the groom
dress to light her candle and seated her, and then
the mother of the bride lit her candle and was seated.
Then we started the "show" by sending the wedding
dress proceeded by a flower girl and at least one
bridesmaid. Each was sent in sets as long as we had
sets. When all the bridal dresses had gone down the isle,
we had a lineup of all the brides maids dresses we had left.
Everyone has had at least one really horrible brides maid dress.
Each person who brought a dress, wrote what was to be
said about it. We had some humorous write ups and some
really touching ones.

We then had Deb Douglas as our featured speaker.
She had us laughing so hard that tears were rolling
down our cheeks.

After that we went to the fellowship hall which was decorated
for the "reception". Our reception coordinator, Susan, had a
wonderful idea. People volunteered to decorate a table of 8,
or a table of 4 in their own china, crystal, and silver.
They did the table cloths and center pieces and everything.
When it was finished, we had 11 tables of 8 and 4 tables of 4,
each decorated by a different person, with different colors and
styles. It was so very elegant and beautiful. The candles
were lit and our ushers were now our servers. The food was
prepared by a caterer, and was brought out on clear plates.
We did not actually use the china, but could see it through
the plates. We had our door prizes given away while the
cake was being cut and served. It all ended up being a day
we will truly remember for a very long time.
