1. FROM JENNIFER

On one of my recent flights from Tulsa to Dallas, some unique
passengers joined us.  His name was Pete, her name was Penny; their last name...Penguin!

Okay, prepare yourself, you won't find any deep spiritual truth here. It was just one of the most enchanting events of my life and I wanted to share it with you.  As my friend Melinda, and I checked in, we did so with the penguins and their accompanying humans!  They were from Sea World  in San Antonio, TX, and were returning from a multiple-city  good-will tour where they
visited children's hospitals.  The ticket agent ushered Melinda
and me, along with the penguins, to the hallway where we
waited to pre-board the plane.  You see, if you are blind,
or if you are a penguin,  you get to board earlier than the
sighted human passengers!

As we waited, we began to question the trainer as to "penguin protocol."  After a comfort level was established, I asked the trainer if he would mind our taking a picture of the penguins so we could show our children.  He was very accommodating and offered for us to kneel next to the crates where Pete and Penny traveled.

As we knelt, much to our surprise, the handler opened the crates and placed Pete on my lap and Penny on the lap of my friend!
We were astonished.  It was the most amazing experience
to touch a little 10-pound penguin named Pete!  He waddled around for us in his little tuxedo as if he knew he had an adoring audience!

Once we boarded, the flight attendant announced that Pete and
Penny would take a customary walk down the aisle of the aircraft.
The crowd  extended a collective sigh of fascination as the little penguin couple weebled and wobbled like two little married people trying to find their seats, all the while squawking at each other! I laughingly told Melinda, "That's my husband Phil and me in 50 years!"

We were all taught in grade school that penguins can't fly.
Well, Pete and Penny did!  When I think of the penguins, I'm
reminded that right in the middle of the ordinary, sometimes God interrupts with just a breath of magic.  Sometimes He lets us
hear music that causes our hearts to skip a beat, or He gives us
a Pete & Penny moment with a reason to laugh--one of those big
laughs that makes our eyes water!  What an amazing God who created those two little toddlers in tuxedos!  And what an amazing God who interrupted my ordinary with such an extraordinary enchantment!

You can see a photo of me, Pete & Penny by visiting
www.womensministry.net/penguins.htm.

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust
in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the
Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13

2. PRAYER: THE FOUNDATION FOR EFFECTIVE WM

Most leaders dream of continuous growth and a
powerful impact upon the lives of all involved.
Unfortunately, not every ministry succeeds.
Sometimes those that do succeed outwardly,
fail to produce life changes inwardly in
the participants.

If you are beginning a new women’s ministry,
building an existing ministry, or initiating
a new aspect of your ministry, these are the
questions you must ask: What is the foundation
I must lay above all others?  What is the key
that unlocks God’s door to power?  On then can
you be confident your ministry will succeed.

Many who believe they know the answer to these
questions point to God’s activity in calling
His people to prayer.  Currently, American
Christianity is experiencing an unprecedented
revival of interest in prayer.  Book studies,
Bible studies, discipleship courses, programs,
prayer rooms, and prayerwalking represent just
some of the activities riding this growing crest
of interest in prayer.

Five Subtle Misconceptions
1. Prayer insures successful ministries.
2. The more I pray, the more God answers;
or the more prayer, the more power.
3. God answers prayer.
4. Prayer changes things.
5. There is power in prayer.

The Key to Success in Ministry
So, what is the key that is greater
than prayer?  The key, the foundation
of success in ministry, is a deepening
love relationship with God.  A successful
ministry is a by-product of intimacy with
God.  The more you talk with God, study His
Word, nurture a love relationship with Him,
and are obedient to Him, the more God gives
you.

In beginning and growing women’s ministries,
God is looking for women who will love Him
totally.  Because the love relationship
pleases God, He invites women to be where
He is, and He honors the love relationship
by accomplishing His work through those women.
If at any time they stray from the love
relationship, God immediately moves to
bring them back into a relationship with
Himself.

Warning:  To an activity-oriented people
there is great temptation to bypass the
love relationship and use prayer as a
means to success.

What are the key principles you must
practice?

1. Step out in faith.
2. Put God first.
3. Seek His interests.
4. Love holiness.
5. Be willing to change for Him.
6. Focus on serving others first.
7. Practice these principles and pursue
Him with passion and intensity.

When a life is characterized by love for
Him and demonstrated by the previous
qualities, prayer will be rich and deep.
When we cease to grow in the areas that
please God and turn away from the love
relationship, it is evident in our prayer
life.  We experience a dryness in prayer,
no apparent answers, or even a dull routine.

3. HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF RADIO OR TV INTERVIEWS

Radio and TV are excellent sources for spreading the word about
a specific event or a particular ministry.  As an individual responsible for helping to organize and promote an event or
ongoing events, you may find yourself about to do an interview
on the air representing your ministry.  If you are like most other human beings, the thought of thousands of people hearing you on
the radio or seeing you on Television makes you, at the very least, slightly nervous.   Tom Egelhoff, author of "How To Market,
Advertise and Promote Your Business Or Service In A Small Town", offers the following 9 tips on how to make the most of radio or TV interviews (especially if they make you nervous):

·Talk to the Interviewer as a Friend
·Prepare!!!
·Visit the Station Prior to the Interview
·Move Around (if doing an interview by phone)
·Bring Something with You to Display
·Use Everyday Language
·Wear Suitable Attire
·Let Someone Else Go First
·Do it Over (if time permits and you aren't broadcasting live)

4. WHAT WORKS FOR US: UMBRELLA ORGANIZATION for WM

In 1991 our church was struggling with the concept of "
Women's Fellowship" as it had been traditionally designed,
with a monthly general meeting and monthly circle meetings.
Attendance tended to include only the 50+ women who
were not involved in the work-force, and they were frustrated
that the "younger" women were not owning a part of the
ministry.

There was dialogue between the younger women and
older women to discuss what changes could be made to
make the women's group of the church more vital and
meet the needs of the women of the church today.
We developed the concept of an "umbrella organization"
with an Executive Council meeting once a month and
overseeing the operation of the programs.

Our Executive Council and their roles consist of:
President - preside, appoint, oversee, represent
Vice-president - assist, edit quarterly newsletter, keep history book
Secretary - keep minutes, correspondence
Treasurer - receive funds, pay bills, keep records
Member-at-large - representative on church board
Enrichment Chairman - study groups, retreats, conferences
Outreach Chairman - helping projects, missions
Service Chairman - bereavement dinners, receptions, kitchen projects
Finance Chairman - fund-raising projects
Special Events Chairman - plan spring and fall events

There is one general meeting of all the women of the church in
the fall to conduct business.  In addition, we have a spring
special event (Ladies Prime Time)  which is an outreach to
invite ladies from the community and surrounding area to a
mini-retreat at our church with an outside speaker. Many
women are involved in weekly small group Bible studies. The
older circles continued meeting as they always had; i.e.. we
didn't take away anything, we just restructured what was
already going on in a different way.

This concept has revitalized our Women's Ministry.  We have
continued to adapt this structure to the needs of our growing
church.  The key to restructuring is tailoring the women's
ministries to fit the needs and desires of the women and the
church they serve.
