wm TIP: PUBLICITY
Tisha has already discussed three of the four
elements to consider when creating CONTRAST in
your publicity material.  In Issue 1 and 2, she
encouraged us to use color, space, and size
effectively. Now she tell us the importance of using
the right type (or fonts) to create CONTRAST.

A general rule of thumb is to never use more than
two typefaces on a page. Of course, there are
exceptions. But be reminded that too many different
kinds of fonts will cause your reader to become
bored, frustrated, and tired. Stick to the basics by
finding a couple of typefaces that have good
CONTRAST when used together, and then stick
with them throughout the entire publication.
Contrast in type entails finding two (or more, if you
have to) typefaces that have dissimilar structure,
weight, and style. The two most commonly used
typefaces that have contrast are Times and Arial.
Times is a described as a serif font (each letter has
fine finishing stroke at the top and bottom), whereas
Arial is a san serif (no finishing stroke). See my
samples at
www.womensministry.net/fontsamples.htm .
Use one for the headline and the other for the
paragraph. You'll be amazed at how professional
your publications can look! Two more things. First,
be careful when using decorative typefaces and
scripts. Note that they are hard to read and should
only be used sparingly. Second, NEVER set a
headline, or any type for that matter, in a script as
ALL CAPS. ALL CAPS are also harder to read. See
my samples at the link above.  Until next time.
Tisha.

FOR SPEAKERS: AN ILLUSTRATION
ABOUT…
Communication: One evening a man and his wife
called another couple to see what they were doing.
"Oh," said the other wife, "we’re just drinking coffee
and talking." As she hung up the phone, she
demanded, "Why don’t we ever do that? They’re
just drinking coffee and talking." Her husband said,
"So make a pot of coffee." They sat with their
freshly brewed coffee, just staring at each other in
silence. "Well, call them back," he directed, "and
find out what they’re talking about."
