5 TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR BREAKOUT SESSION
INTERACTIVE
1. Arrange chairs in a circular or "U" shaped -or arrange chairs in
quads, slightly curved to encourage interaction among a few
participants. Point: Seeing faces of others encourages openness
2. Lean against a table or stand to the side of the podium, rather
than standing behind the podium. Point: Remove real and
imagined barriers between you and the audience.
3. Use open-ended statements/questions rather than close-
ended "yes-no" questions. Example of open-ended question:
Turn to your neighbors and describe one experience when you
felt closest to God. Example of closed question: Was there ever
a time a time you felt closest to God?
4. Be bright. Make sure lights in room are fully maximized.
Brighter rooms tend to create openness; darker rooms tend to
create a subdued mood.
5. When brainstorming with participants, record their ideas on
flipchart or overhead. This communicates "your ideas are
important". from Philip Rothschild, Ph.D.

FOR SPEAKERS: AN ILLUSTRATION ABOUT
Making Something out of Nothing (The Piano)
Wishing to encourage her young son's progress on the
piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert.
After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the
audience and walked down the aisle to greet her. Seizing
the opportunity to explore, the little boy rose and
eventually found his way through a door marked "NO
ADMITTANCE." When the house lights dimmed and the
concert was about to begin, the mother discovered that
the child was missing. Suddenly, the curtains parted and
spotlight focused on the impressive Stein way on stage. In
horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the
keyboard, innocently picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little
Star." At that moment, the great piano master made his
entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in
the boy's ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing." Then leaning
over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and
began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached
around to the other side of the child and he added a
running obligato. Together, the old master and the young
novice transformed a frightening situation into a
wonderfully creative experience. And the audience was
mesmerized. (author unknown)

Whatever our situation in life and history, however
outrageous or desperate, whatever dry spell of the spirit
or dark night of the soul, God is whispering within our
beings, "Keep playing. You are not alone. Together we
will transform the broken patterns into a masterwork of
my creative art. Together, we will mesmerize the world
