    Black Thursday

At our home last week, Black Friday began very early. Four a.m. to be exact!! I am referring to the notorious day after Thanksgiving shopping frenzy. Just like turkey and cranberry sauce, post Thanksgiving Day bargain shopping has become part of our holiday tradition!

The men in my family spend all thanksgiving evening with newspapers spread upon the kitchen table. They each have colored highlighters and red pens. They make detailed lists of who will go to which store at which time to buy which product. It’s quite the strategy and so they set out to conquer!! They set their alarm clocks and roll out of bed early to execute the pre-dawn maneuvers!

I, on the other hand, wait until mid-afternoon to venture out. When I go out, it’s just to meander, it’s really out of amusement rather than the expectation of actually buying something advertised in the newspaper. Anything I would have wanted to buy was surely gone by six a.m. anyway!

Black Friday comes to a close in our home as my weary husband squinting with tired red eyes watches the evening news; he is always curious to hear and see the local stories of fist fights started in long lines at department stores and interviews with elated shoppers who announce with relief that they got something for every one on their list!

Black Friday amuses me for all together different reasons. Oh yes, I love a bargain and the study in human behavior is fascinating, but, I am most interested in it because it reminds me of another famous Friday that we celebrate in the spring-Good Friday.

You see, black Friday got its name from the fact that it was the day that retailers could get out of the red and count on finally being in the black! So much hinged on that day. It paid their debt and gave them great profit. The same happened for us on Good Friday. Even though it was a very dark day of sadness, it ushered in for each of us great gain. It was the day that our debt was paid and our debtor was satisfied.

When Jesus hung on the cross, our sin weighing heavy upon Him, our deep debt was being paid. When He screamed out in agony “It is finished”, we went from the red to the black and we found ourselves with great profit!

If we as consumers only believe in the promises of black Friday, yet, never venture out into the store to receive them, we don’t experience the benefit of the day. The same applies to Good Friday. If we only approach the Cross with amusement and vacillating belief, we won’t receive the great benefit of that great day.

Jesus placed himself in the red so we could be in the black-it’s important to believe that but, it’s equally important to receive the gift-to venture out, trust, and stake our very lives on the notion that what He promised is true and what He paid is sufficient. The debt that remains is that of gratitude. May we all say with the Apostle...“Thanks be to God for His unspeakable Gift!”

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. II Cor. 5:21 NASB

    Program/Ministry Idea
    Mug and Muffin

Objectives: To share God's Word and reach out to the women of our church, their friends and neighbors.

Description: Mug & Muffin is a once a month fellowship time for the women of our church and their friends.

We chose a topic for the year, this year it is "Bad Girls of the Bible" by Liz Curtis Higgs. Our hostess of the month opens up her home and the ladies bring their own "Mug." We have a team of bakers who bring the "Muffins." Mug & Muffin is a morning of spiritual teaching and fellowship that has proven to be a great way for new women of the church to get to know each other. Also, because we hold this in homes, it tends to be a very comfortable, relaxing atmosphere where women feel free to share.

This was the first year, the Mug & Muffin team actually planned out the whole year in advance. Because we offer the program from Sept - May, the summer months were great for planning.

    Key Elements

Speakers: We began by prayed over and for women to be our speakers. Because we had chosen a book for the theme, we asked each speaker to share from it. Having the materials available and knowing they were only committing to one morning was helpful in recruiting speakers.

Host homes: We asked women who have helped in this area before to cover the first few months and then had a sign-up sheet available for the rest of the months at our "Fall Kick-off."

Budget: We allow $10.00 per month for muffins (we typically have 15-20 in attendance) and usually, though we don't expect it, our host homes tend to supply the coffee, tea and a few extra pastry goodies.

    Schedule:

    • 9:30 - 9:45: Ladies fellowship over coffee
    • 9:45: One of women from planning team opens in prayer, goes around room to make sure everyone knows each other, share upcoming Womens Ministry events and introduces speaker
    • 10:00 - 10:30/10:45: Speaker
    • 10:30/10:45 - 11:30: We discuss what speaker has shared. Depending on size of group we may break into smaller groups or just stay together as one group and discuss. (The book we are using has questions provided.)
    • Close in prayer
