In His Hands: A Tribute to Stephanie Wright

As a fifteen year old girl, one of the first songs I wrote was called "In His Hands." I would sit at my living room piano and sing the teenage lyrics with full earnest and belief. I was only confident to sing in those early days when no one else was listening, so my only audience was God! A simple lyric from the song that I can still remember is, "I don’t know what tomorrow holds, but I know it’s in His Hands."

In His Hands is a commonly used phrase but, as I go through life, I have found that it is an uncommon way to live. To live in His Hands is to live in utter dependence upon God, with an intimate understanding of His full and real moment by moment presence. Stephanie Wright lived “In His Hands.”

My friend Stephanie was an event coordinator for LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville. She specialized in women's events and helped to pull off the massive Beth Moore Living Proof weekends. I first met Stephanie at a national LifeWay women's conference where I was invited to speak. Over the years, we have met at meetings, conferences and conventions. What always struck me about her was her sweet disposition and her peacefulness. She had a certain knowing about her that was attractive and captivating. This past summer, Stephanie drove me back to the airport after a meeting and, once again, I marveled to her that “I could not believe a man hadn’t snagged her yet!” Age thirty-one and single, Stephanie giggled and responded, as she had in the past, that she was content with Jesus and she knew He would provide the perfect marriage when it was time.

Such an occasion came on December 23 of 2005. On her way home for the Christmas holiday, Stephanie was involved in a horrible car accident. Stephanie, who lived her life “in His Hands,” died “in His Hands.” She was instantly united with the Man of her dreams. As part of the Bride of Christ, she was welcomed into His arms. I bet she recognized Him by His lovely hands. For those were the hands that held her, guided her, protected her, and comforted her through this life.

A Christmas letter she wrote contained these precious and profound words. I want to leave them with you as as an encouragement to live as she did:

“I pray that you will allow God to continue the work He began in you this past weekend. He WILL be faithful to complete it! I pray you have a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Enjoy time with your family and friends remembering why we celebrate. God sent His only Son for us so we might have relationship with Him. May we never take that for granted. May we count everything else as loss just to know Him! God bless you all and we will look forward to seeing you next year!"

    In HIS Hands,
    Stephanie Wright

“In His Hands” is far more than a simple song lyric, it’s a lifestyle. We really don’t know what tomorrow holds, but we do know that it is in His hands. Let's live like we really know and believe that. May each of us spend this coming year "in His hands” and in the words of Stephanie, may we "count everything else as loss just to know Him."

Thank you Stephanie for your beautiful life. Though we will miss you, we are grateful you are “in His hands.”

"More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things..."
    Phillipians 3:8a NASB

    Event Idea
    You Glow Girl!

    Based on: Matt. 5:14-16

Description: This was a night of lights and encouragement. Our purpose was to encourage women to walk as the light of the world. The ladies enjoyed sweet treats and a great time of fellowship followed by a devotion on being "light."

We decorated with twinking Christmas lights and candles and used candles as door prizes.

    Group Activity
    Remember When

Objectives: Conversation starter... learning about other's lives.

    Materials: pennies

Procedure: Gather a selection of pennies to hand out to each women at your event. Each person should receive one penny. Have each person look at the date on the penny and share what they were doing in that year or where they lived, etc... It was a wonderful way to remember back to the events in our lives. We did this at a recent progressive supper!
