    From Jennifer

    Tell Me Why

I listened as Debbie recounted a story of a recent family vacation where she and her husband, and two sons traveled to Colorado for a summer adventure.

She giggled as she told about their growing disenchantment with fast food during the trip. You know what it’s like when traveling. Taco Bell just doesn’t “ring your bell” after eating a steady diet of it! The Golden Arches had lost their glimmer, and the King of Burgers himself, was dethroned as far as Debbie’s family was concerned!

Hungry for a well balanced meal, they settled into a local restaurant. The fragrance of pot roast and potatoes, freshly brewed coffee, and warm apple crisp was inviting to the weary travelers. Each ordered their meal when the waitress arrived. But when she returned with their meals, they were astounded by the portions! They were huge! There was enough food on just one plate to feed the entire family!

Mom and Dad ate about half of their meal and then, miserably, pushed their plates away. Their youngest son, a strapping teenager, eventually did the same. Though the rest of the family was fully satisfied, the oldest son, Dustin, was not. He had finished his own dinner and was looking longingly at the leftovers on his family’s plates.

Dustin is a precious young man with Downs Syndrome, and his mother Debbie says he loves to eat!! Debbie knew this setting was not the place to prohibit Dustin from engaging in one of his favorite pastimes, so when he asked for his brother’s leftovers, Mom consented.

After Dustin had finished his own, and his brother’s dinner, the waitress arrived and asked, “May I take your plate?” Dustin simply shook his head. He proceeded to finish up his Dad’s lukewarm leftovers. The waitress returned once again. “May I take your plate?” “No,” was Dustin’s simple response. He then directed his fork and his intentions toward his Mother’s plate and began to eat. The waitress returned one last time and flatly inquired, “May I take your plate now?”

Irritated and reconciled to his fate, Dustin finally agreed.

No sooner had the waitress gathered the empty plates and turned to leave for the kitchen did Dustin announce to his family: “That waitress needs to get her own food!”

I laughed when Debbie told such a sweet story. But I marvel at its profound message.

Often we set examples for our children. We model good and godly behavior for those who observe our lives just like Debbie and her family had modeled proper restaurant behavior for Dustin. But often modeling is not enough. Sometimes, we must explain why we do the things we do. Obviously, Dustin, with his special needs, did not understand “why” the waitress wanted his leftovers. He only knew that it was customary behavior for a waitress in a restaurant.

Likewise, others may not really understand why we “believers” do the things we do. Why do we pray before meals? Why do we forgive, when our violator clearly was wrong? Why do we see issues as black and white, when our culture sees only gray? Why do we never stop hoping?

Though a godly life speaks volumes to those who observe, your example may need explanation for its greatest impact. So be ready, my friend, to give an answer, for the Hope that is in you!

Proclaim the message; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching. 2 Timothy 4:2

    Event/Outreach Idea
    A Sandwich for My Sister

Based on: I am my Sister's Keeper, Genesis 4:9, or The Book of Ruth and other scripture where God comments us to love one another.

Description: This event is held at lunchtime and each lady attending is asked to bring her favorite sandwich - cut in half. The Women's Ministry supplies soup, chilli, or chowder for the Fall/Winter month and cold salads for the Spring/Summer and drinks.

To mix things up, each woman is encouraged to find someone they do not know to share sandwiches with. You can also hand out 1/2 of a card to each woman and have them find their other half. The ladies then eat lunch together.

A short, meaningful devotion can be given. WM.NET note: This is a great event to use for working women who typically have a lunch hour they can devote to meeting at least once a month.

    Way Back Machine
Another one of our favorite ideas from past issues

    wmIcebreaker: Give it to God
    from Issue # 125 Friday, July 5, 2002

Objectives: To encourage people to let go of all their worries and concerns

    Materials: Balloons

Procedure: Hand everyone a balloon. Begin asking questions like, "Have you had a rough week?...Are you worried about something?...Do you have a friend or family member that needs prayer?," etc. As you ask the question, tell the participants to blow into their balloon, one blow for each question they answer yes to. You will see the balloons begin to fill up quickly!

Tell them to hold the balloon (don't tie it), and then read them I Peter 5:7. "Cast all of your cares upon Him, for He cares for you."

We often feel like the balloon, ready to burst, but explain that we can either hang on to our worries and concerns or we can release them to God. Everyone usually lets go of their balloons, and they go flying all over the room!

Just for Fun: Jennifer at State of the Union

Many of you know that Jennifer and Philip were invited to the State of the Union Address on Tuesday night by Congressman Bill Young and his wife Beverly of Florida. Being in the gallery was a once in a lifetime experience -- Jennifer will write about it next time. Here is a picture of Jennifer with the Congressman and Beverly, and Philip (left).

If you've been watching the news you have heard about the two women being escorted from the Gallery because of their t-shirts. This photo was taken about an hour after Beverly Young was unfortunately escorted out because of her "Support the Troops" t- shirt.
