    Leadership Tip: Accountability Group
    women talking at a table

Most of us are accountable to some type of leadership at work, which is very necessary. But, it is just as important, if not more so, to have some type of peer accountability in our lives.

A couple of years ago Kathy Landis of Mt. Holly Springs United Methodist sent in an idea for a mentoring breakfast that really struck a chord with me. Their group meets on Saturday mornings and the purpose of their group is to "encourage and hold each other accountable to live our lives in a Godly manner."

Here is what they do, in their own words:

We gather every Saturday morning for breakfast at a local restaurant, starting at 7:00 am. The atmosphere is quiet at that time of day. We stay for as long as each woman is able. (Some leave at 8 a.m., some at 9 a.m.) We go over some questions, air our struggles and victories, and offer up suggestions to help one another. We also pray for each other. Our group is made up of five to eleven women from different churches in the area. We have all said we are more aware of what we do during the week because of this group. Everyone is growing in the Lord, we have seen a new boldness in our witnessing to others and we are memorizing more scripture.

I took some questions that are used at a Men's Accountability Breakfast and modified them to suit our group. They are:

    1. Have you prayed with/for your spouse this week?
    2. Have you shared your faith with someone this week?
    3. Have you given of your time/tithes to the Lord this week?
    4. Have you spent time in Bible reading/devotions/memorizing this week?
    5. What has God been saying to you through His Word this week?
    6. Have you seen any movies/shows, read any books, listened to music that you would be embarrassed to tell your Christian friends about?
    7. What sins in your personal or business life did you experience this week that need to be confessed?
    8. How did you influence your marriage and family this week? How positively? How negatively? What could you do to improve?
    9. What challenges or struggles are weighing on your mind?
    10. What Bible study or personal devotions are you currently doing?

We laminated a copy of the questions for each woman to carry with them.

We began the group by advertising in our church bulletin and by word-of-mouth. We stressed that it was not necessary to buy something every time and encourage women to come when their schedule allowed them too. This hour of the morning is too early for some, but works out well for those of us with children. (Dad can be at home with them.)

Sound like a great idea right? But how many of us actually do this?

I honestly believe that we cannot serve to our fullest capacity, that God cannot fully use us, until we are willing to be transparent... until we take off our "church girl super girdles" and share with some trusted friends our struggles and "soft spots." Notice the key words here... trusted friends.

So my challenge to you is to begin to build your trusted friend accountability group. Take pieces from the above idea and modify them to build your own leadership accountability group!

    Just do it!

    In Him... Robyne Beaubien, Editor

Ministry Tip: Checklist for Fall Ministry
    calendar

Whether you are getting ready to kick-off Fall ministries, or if you are already knee deep in them, take a minute to double check that you have covered these items.

    • Church Calendar - Place all your Bible studies and events are on the church calendar.
    • Website - Update your website or webpage with all the information about your studies and events. List costs, contact names and numbers, to make information easily accessible.
    • Volunteers - Double check that you have all your volunteers in place. Teachers, nursery workers, speakers, decorators... whoever they are, have them ready to go.
    • Be Specific - let your volunteers and leaders know exactly what is expected of them. Have clear and simple guidelines for their duties. Trust me, it will make everything run much smoother!
    • Study Materials - Double check that all your materials are in place for each study. Have additional Bibles available, just in case.
    • Marketing (Studies) - Create a flyer reminding women of the Bible studies that are available. List dates, times, and leaders. If your studies have started, let women know what week they are in and if they can jump in now. (We have picked up a couple of women who had done the study we were in before, but had not finished it. They joined us in week 3!)
    • Marketing (Events) - Again, create a brochure for your events, or incorporate the events and studies together. Let women know what is happening so they can get your events on their calendars.
    • Back-up Plan - Do you have a contingency plan for what happens if something gets offline in a study or at an event? Have back-up leaders for your studies and ideas for what you will do if your meeting space is accidentally double booked, etc.
    • Thank You Notes - Send thank you notes to your ministry and study leaders. Letting them know you appreciate their willing hearts and also that you will be praying for them!
    • Pray - You know how key prayer is. Find some time to stop and pray with your leadership team. Consider dividing up and going into each study/event room and pray for God to begin working in the hearts and lives of the women who will be attending!
    • Look Ahead - It may seem far away, but the New Year will be here before you know it. Make a list of studies, events and dates for the Spring.
