Ministry: Bundles of Joy

Printer-Friendly Format

An outreach to new mothers in your community!

This is an idea that was brought to our church by someone who was blessed by a similar ministry in another state! When a woman in our community has a baby, we try to stop by in the first month and take her a gift basket.

The basket typically has:

  • A stuffed animal
  • Baby powder, oil, and wash
  • Diaper wipes
  • A receiving blanket (we hope to start a crochet or quilting workshop/class to make these in the future.)
  • A sleeper
  • A Bible story book
  • Brochures about our church and our women's ministry
  • Parent Life Magazine from LifeWay

The ladies go in pairs to visit new mothers. They make an appointment to give the mom time to prepare, and try to keep the visit brief. They also bring a digital camera and take a picture of the mom and baby, as well as any other family members that may be there.

The visit is followed up in about a week with a "we are praying for you" card and a copy of the picture that was taken.

We find the women through word of mouth and watch the birth announcements in the paper.

This is such a great way to touch the lives of new moms, many of whom do not have family nearby.

Bundles of Joy, June 17, 2009

Our church has a bundles of joy ministry as well. We do Fleece tie blankets for the babies. We have a lady in our church who has an embroidery machine and puts the baby's name, date of birth, etc. on the blankets and she changes it up each time so they all have something different on them.

Mom and Baby Connection, January 7, 2010

The women in our church often feel disconnected from one another. We began "Mom and Baby Connection" to minister to pregnant women and new mothers in our congregation. We pray for needs during and after pregnancy, visit new mothers, take a picture to celebrate the new arrival and leave behind a basket of blessing with items for the new mom, baby and any siblings.

I loved reading this article about "Bundles of Joy" because it challenged me to consider how me might extend "Mom and Baby Connection" beyond the walls of our church.
