Icebreaker: Balloon Burst
Robyne Beaubien

This is a game I love to use as an opening for retreats! It's loads of fun and gets everyone involved.

Prepare in Advance: Write the name of everyone attending the retreat on a nametag. Roll up
each one and place them in individual balloons. Fill the balloons with helium and attach long ribbons. Place your balloon bouquet in a convenient location where you will be able to access it during the opening session of your retreat or event.

At the Retreat: Allow for a time during your opening and welcome to let all of the balloons go. It may work better under some circumstances to let the balloons go before guests arrive. Either way works just find. If the ceiling is too high to be able to reach the balloons, eliminate the helium. Just blow up the balloons and let them float around the floor.

After your welcome, ask each woman to choose a balloon and pop it. Their task is to find the person whose name is on the paper inside the balloon.

This is such a fun way to introduce women to each other. They will meet at least two women, the one whose nametag they have and the one who has their name.

Variation #1: If most of the women at your event already know each other, consider having each woman include three clues about themselves on their registration form. Place these clues inside the balloons instead of names.

Variation #2: You can also use this activity to create small groups.  Insert colors, names or numbers to divide attendees equally into groups. Groups will be divided up by color, name, number, etc.

I have done this at a small leadership retreat with 20 women and a large weekend conference with 700 women. One obviously took longer than the other!  Plan it in conjunction with a meal or reception if you have a large group.  Lots of variations and lots of fun!
