Response to Banner Question

I have created 7 banners for our church sanctuary & I will say that they add a lot of spirit to the once blank walls.  Some banners are for everyday & some are for holidays.

If you have a favorite saying or verse that is a good way to start creating a banner.  One banner I am really proud of is "The Anchor Holds".  This theme came to me from the Christian singer Ray Boltz who sings a beautiful song called "The Anchor Holds".  Plus our Pastor sings the song.  I located a verse in the Bible that communicates how the Anchor Holds (God Holds through all situations).  You may want to also place the Bible verse in smaller letters on the lower section of the banner.

The words for the banner I do on the computer with a software program called Print Master.  I use the banner section to print the words in very large print (each letter being 6 inches large, or larger).  I cut the letters out, then pin them to fabric & cut them out.  I also use Print Master for the artwork, or sometimes I will draw freehand.  Most of the time I use a fabric glue to glue the letters & artwork onto the main banner fabric.  I have also sew on some items, it just depends what will work best.  The more you have on a banner the longer it will take to complete.

For Easter I set up a banner team, so we could finish the banner quickly.  I designed the banner & 2 other ladies helped by cutting out letters, measuring, etc.  This particular banner we even used fabric paint & painted a sky that was to look like a sunset.  The sky started red, blended into orange & finally ended up yellow close to the mountains of black felt.

You can get great ideas from Christian greeting cards - everyday cards or holiday cards.  If you create a banner team you can brain storm alot & come up with some wondeful, spiritual banners.  You may want to also visit some other churches in your area to see what they have created.

I always sew a hem in the top of the fabric so I can use a curtain rod to hang the banner, or you can sew metal or plastic rings onto the back & hang the banner onto the wall with hooks.  Take your time with the banner and create something you are proud of.

Creating the banner & picking out the material is fun for me.  Make sure you have a material for the banner that will hang nice on the wall.  You can always add items to the banner to make it interesting, such as, sew ribbon as a border, sew on a chiffon swag,  have a 3 dimensional banner by stuffing parts with pillow stuffing, etc.  You can also use a variety of materials or purchase pre made items to sew onto the banner.  One banner I sewed stars onto the background which were purchased at a craft store when they were on sale.  You can purchase fringe or tassels, just depends on what you are trying to create.  The sky is the limit with this project.......

I usually take a picture of my banner to keep on file for my records.  I have also kept my patterns for most of the banners.

Pray & ask God for direction in this banner project.  Ask him what his will is for you to create, so you can communicate to whoever walks into your church through your banner.  God will give you a direction.

Besides "The Anchor Holds" I have created other banners that say:
Awesome God
Follow the Son (as in follow Jesus)
Forward in Faith
Love The Lord With All Your Heart, Soul, Mind
He is Risen (Easter Banner)
Give Thanks (Thanksgiving)
Peace * Joy * Love * Jesus (Christmas)

If you have any questions please E-Mail me & maybe I can help more or you can help me.  Please let me know if this helps you out.

Have fun with this project.

Sincerely,
Sindy Slowinski
